When I was in high school and once I started wrestling seriously, I soon became obsessed with getting my neck big and strong. I studied everything I could and asked as many experts as I could find how to train my neck so I can build it specifically for wrestling. And once I started to train Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) that obsession became even stronger, because of all the dangerous neck cranks and choke holds involved, and all the crazy positions you can wind up in that put direct stress on the neck.

So along with my training, I concentrated every single day on doing something that would build and strengthen my neck. I was blessed in having great training partners and coaches who helped me train my neck the right way, and I was able to build my neck to over 20 inches and perform all kinds of crazy neck exercises and routines.

But then something crazy happened…

At a wrestling camp the summer before my senior year, I had a neck injury that forced me to have emergency surgery (AFTER I finished wrestling at the camp). After all the x-rays and tests, the doctors told me I should be DEAD. They said if it wasn't for the muscles in my neck, I wouldn't have survived the injury and at best, would've been paralyzed in a wheelchair breathing from a machine for the rest of my life.

They told me to forget about wrestling. That I should just be glad I'm alive. They told me I wouldn't be able to do any kind of contact sports whatsoever or lift any kind of heavy weights, or do any of the things I conditioned my body to be able to do.

But they were dead WRONG.

Because of the knowledge I had about neck training, I was able to build myself back up after having an emergency C1-C2 fusion surgery and get back on the mats. I'm not saying this to impress you, but instead to impress upon you the importance of training your neck specifically for grappling and combat sports.

Over the years, I've lost a lot of great training partners and coaches from neck injuries. I've seen so many wrestlers and grapplers go down and never come back from herniated discs and other neck injuries. And I don't want it to happen to you.
